Dear Wolf Pack Family,

June is Pride Month, a time for all of us to celebrate, honor and learn more about the achievements of the LGBTQIA2S+ community which has long been a vibrant part of Northern ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì and our campus community.

We take a great deal of pride in knowing that members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community are playing key roles in furthering our institutional mission as a place of learning, discovery and engagement. The accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff who are part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community have made us a stronger and more inclusive institution of higher learning.

It is equally important that the ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì, Reno continues to affirm that our campus is a place that welcomes and provides space for equality and understanding for members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Homophobia and gender identity oppression have no place at the ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì, Reno.

Although June is Pride Month throughout ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì and our country, Northern ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì Pride, our area’s largest LGBTQIA2S+ celebration, will be held later this year, on Sept. 7, 2024 in order to continue to hold the event outdoors during a month when Northern ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì’s temperatures are more moderate.

The day-long Northern ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì Pride celebration will feature all of the festivities we’ve come to enjoy, including a celebration of diversity and culture, a look at the history of the LGBTQIA2S+ movement, and ways all members of the public can advocate for a better future. The parade will be in downtown Reno starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, with being held in Wingfield Park and surrounding streets from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

I also wish to make you all aware of the I recorded with Dr. Paul Kwon, a professor in our Department of Psychology and our Director of Clinical Training. Our far-reaching conversation touches on a variety of topics, including Dr. Kwon’s scholarship and research studies that have taken a deep and insightful look into the resilience of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Dr. Kwon’s episode will be available on June 20.

We have a wonderful opportunity this month and throughout the year to celebrate support the LGBTQIA2S+ community. As we do this, let us also reflect on the ways that we can continue to make our campus an even more nurturing place, where all people know that they are welcomed and valued — that at the ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì, Reno all people always know they belong and that they are always part of the Pack.
